Artsy’s annual grouping of the most groundbreaking artists of the year is one of the brand’s most popular and anticipated features. In past years, we have commissioned illustration or licensed artist portraits for this feature, and in 2018 we pursued our first external commission for a design treatment. Our intention was to incorporate the artists’ portraits but foremost, to emphasize their artwork. Since we’d be sourcing existing portraits in various styles, and would highlight artwork in various styles, we wanted to use graphic elements to bring an overall cohesiveness to the feature.
